Automobile Sales Demise and Internet Usage
Over the last 3 years the economy has fallen behind and many in Generation Y may not be able to afford the luxury of car ownership. Additionally, the use of commuter rails and car pooling may have a factor in the decreased auto sales. I am positive that the social media and the internet do not have a major impact with decreased car sales. It is true that online schools have increased enrollment. However, students of these schools frequently use automobiles for other uses. I am certain that users of the internet and those of us living in the digital age will still rely on air travel and hotel accommodations because our I Phone and Blackberries haven’t come up with a flying “app” as of yet. The invention of mobile internet and smart phones is a result of us constantly being on the move and mobile. In order to be mobile most of us use vehicle. However, those of us fortunate to live in a city that public transportation is reliable may choose to use this instead of purchasing a vehicle.

I love how you said that Iphone and Blackberry hasn't come up with an app that drives or flies for us. Thats my point exactly, the internet is not a factor that would prevent young people from buying a car because even if you take online classes most likely you will still need to drive to the university to meet up with a study group or to take an in person exam. So as you said before if someone really thinks that young people would rather buy a cellphone or learn online than drive to their graduation and visit there friends, then they must not know nothing about the Y generation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the cause of the decline in auto sales is not due to the Internet. Like you said, car pooling and online classes has become more popular and teens and twenties are choosing these methods rather than having to think about spending on a car and insurance and gas. It's not just the car. A car cannot run without gas which prices are increasing everyday and also insurance costs. I think it's a package deal and that package is not very attractive lately. As for the flying app... who knows.. Steve Jobs could be coming close.. lol
ReplyDeleteI also agree with all of you, automobile sales have dropped because of the bad economy. Many young adults are cutting back on expenses and buying a car requires monthly payments as well as gas and maintenance expenses. Increasing unemployment rates make it easy to see why purchasing a car is a luxury for some. Taking a flight or staying in a hotel is a onetime expense that is much more affordable than a car no matter what the economy or unemployment looks like.
ReplyDeleteGreat points! I love that you brought up the fact that iPhones were made for mobile use. I also feel like it is just the economic decline that has lead to this decrease in car ownership. I'm 21 and am just now considering buying a car because I couldn't afford to do so previously. When I was in high school I would always carpool or use mass transportation. My parents certainly could not afford to buy me a car. Most parents now a days can't!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. I don't see the internet as a cause of low car sales. The current economy is a huge factor in that matter. I would say now auto dealerships uses internet and media networks as a way of gain people to buy cars.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, the internet has created more business for everyone including jobs and products, and with more jobs and products comes more people needing cars to use. The auto industry is just looking for someone to blame for the recent bad auto sales. They should look toward the recession.
ReplyDeleteLike you said, the Internet has not made a MAJOR impact on the auto-industry, albiet ANY impact on the auto-industry. For them to blame the Internet usage for the loss of auto sales, is very ridiculous. I truly believe the airline industry will be next in blaming the Internet in the declining sales of ticket sales. After all, why visit relatives and friends when you can chat with them online? Now isn't that a really good reason to blame the Internet on the declining sales of airline tickets?
